The first azadi I got after stepping in varsity life was the azadi to take my own political stands. Accompanied by a few like minded friends it was easy to not only generate opinions but now we also felt empowered and aware enough to stage 'protests'.
The first ever protest of my life was the most dangerous one, it was against the existence of APMSO and Islami Jamiat e Talaba and all student political groups in KU, we risked our lives. We couldn’t achieve exactly what we wanted , all what we were able to do was get recognition from the VC for taking such a bold initiative, neutral students whom we represent usually absolve their selves from issues at campus!
After which we realized that we have what it takes to form a political party, though we didn’t form one, but lived four years of our life like Lenin or Mao Zedong. The experience so far has been good; I have no regrets for staging a protest on almost all big issues that occurred during my 4 year university tenure.
The 2 big lessons learnt are,
1) Just protests matter nothing unless the amount of people agthered is large and is regularly followed up. ( extracted from chapter on news values in Dynamics:)
2) The sluggish attitude of fellow students!
Out of the 25,000 intellectuals who visit KU five days a week on an average, there are hardly 5 to 20 students who are even aware of the powers and rights of a student, the majority believes in living life to its fullest, they are always there for singing & dancing and never for work .here work must be redefined, ‘work is any thing that results in capital’, as per this law, staging a protest or showing concern on issues that matter us does not fall into the category of work !
If being lazy was the limit that would have been still considerable but unfortunately this lethargic majority is a believer in the notion “sleep and let sleep” ,they deliberately confuse and demotivate all those who they can ,and I am damn sure that they do not do it because they value time more than us , its just that they fear that if the active minority turns into an effective majority it might force them to come out of their deep slumber !
The decision of taking up a position on any issue is the personal right of every individual, but discouraging others and particularly confusing them is a criminal act according to me !
